Part six starts with a feel good section, involving Rosa, Hans, Liesel, and Max building a snowman in the basement. Unfortunately that same night, Max’s health started to deteriorate. In early February Max collapses next to the fire and is moved to Liesels room in an attempt to keep him from freezing in the basement. Liesel as a sign of great friendship gives Max thirteen presents throughout the time of his sickness. At the same time Rosa and Hans argue and become stressed about what to do if he dies. Later in part six Rudy and Liesel go to steal from the Mayor’s house again through an open window. Liesel steals another book this time called, The Dream Carrier. Fortunately soon after stealing The Dream Carrier, Max recovers. Liesel reads The Dream Carrier to him late into the night fearing that he might fall asleep and become sick again.
After Max’s recovery and the bombing of cologne the Nazi party goes to Himmel Street to find more basements for the air raid shelter. Liesel notices this during a soccer game, she then collides with one of the bigger kids on purpose to get out of the game. Once she is out of the game and saftely home she tells Hans about what is going on. He in turn yells a warning to Max about the basement search, and tells everyone to act normal. Not a moment after this, the Nazi’s knock on the door, and come to inspect the basement. They find the basement to be of inadequate depth and leave without spotting Max under the painting canvases. A minute later there is another knock on the door sending everyone into a panic mode once again, but it is only Rudy checking up on Liesel to see if she is ok from the collision. This is the end of part six.
